LOW INCOME TAXPAYER CLINIC

Legal Aid Service of Broward County’s (LAS) Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) assists individuals with a federal income tax controversy up to $50,000.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE

Individuals whose income is not more than 250% of the federal poverty guidelines with a federal tax controversy not exceeding $50,000 in a single year.

WHAT LITC DOES

LAS's Low Income Taxpayer Clinic provides representation on federal tax matters before the IRS and in federal courts including the United States Tax Court.  The Clinic can provide assistance in preparation of prior year tax returns and in preparation of amended returns, if such assistance is necessary to resolve a controversy.  The Clinic CANNOT prepare and file tax returns for the current year. The clinic will not provide assistance in criminal cases.

TYPES OF CASES

LITC can assist you in most tax controversies under $50,000 in a single year including:

  • Examination/audits
  • Deficiency notices
  • Earned income credit disallowance
  • Collection issues including liens and levy
  • Appeals
  • Innocent and injured spouse claims

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Proof of income
  • Social Security card (client and dependents)
  • Copies of tax returns
  • IRS notices and correspondence

The Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) is not a part of the Internal Revenue Service, the United States Tax Court or Florida Department of Revenue.  Partial funding for the LITC Project is provided, however, by the Internal Revenue Service - Taxpayer Advocate Service.  All telephone conversations and client interview/discussions are confidential and all legal services are free to eligible clients.
